Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (1993)

Part of the CD-booklet-text by Mario Beretta: The violin concerto, which was mainly composed during Müller`s residence at the Aspen Music Festival (Colorado, USA) in 1992 and 1993, and the «Nachtgesänge» which was composed in Sweden in 1994 should be seen in a larger context. The three songs for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble based on poems of Hermann Hesse represent the end of a phase of life where the foundations of his personage were shaken. The violin concerto begins with a whole tone scale theme starting on a primeval low tone, and this theme shows itself in many different guises throughout the movement. The composer comments, «The limited ability to modulate and the static character of the whole tone scale with its augmented triad structure represent desperation and being trapped. ln this sound possibility however is an expansiveness and tension which desires to break out of the limits and restrictions. This is, seen symbolically, a new viewpoint in the situation, and can turn the feeling of being locked in into a feeling of hope». This process is perceived in the change in the emotional content of the work. After the dark and heavy (whole tone) sound world of the first movement - from time to time broken up with light flashes, the meditative second movement, comes the positive filled with joy and hope third movement.
